    The diffraction of low energy electrons from disordered overlayers adsorbed on ordered substrates is treated theoretically by an extension of Beeby's multiple scattering method. A lattice gas model is assumed for the disordered adsorbate layer. Multiple scattering within a certain area around each atom — each atom of the overlayer and within the ordered substrate — is treated self-consistently, the remaining contributions to the total scattering amplitude being averaged. The theory can be used in the limiting cases of random distribution and of long range order within the adsorbate layer

    It is shown that the diffraction of slow electrons from disordered crystal surfaces is correlated with the problem of thermodynamical statistics. The correlation functions are completely determined by the self-energies and interaction energies of neighboring complexes. These quantities solve the problem of a-priori probabilities and the cooperative phenomenon of correlation functions of these complexes. If the calculation of a certain set of multiple scattering amplitudes is possible, the remaining problem of determining the diffuse LEED pattern becomes solvable. The calculation of angular beam profiles follows the same lines as already described for the kinematic theory of X-ray diffraction

    The LEED pattern of clean (101) surfaces of Au show a characteristic (1 × 2) superstructure. The diffuseness of reflections in the reciprocal [010] direction is caused by one-dimensional disorder of chains, strictly ordered into spatial [10 ] direction. There is a transition from this disordered superstructure to the normal (1 × 1) structure at 420 + 15°C. The angular profiles of the and (01) beam are measured at various temperatures and with constant energy and angles of incidence of the primary beam. The beam profiles are deconvoluted approximately with the instrument response function

    Polydisperse star polymer solutions

    We analyze the effect of polydispersity in the arm number on the effective interactions, structural correlations and the phase behavior of star polymers in a good solvent. The effective interaction potential between two star polymers with different arm numbers is derived using scaling theory. The resulting expression is tested against monomer-resolved molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the theoretical pair potential is in agreement with the simulation data in a much wider polydispersity range than other proposed potentials. We then use this pair potential as an input in a many-body theory to investigate polydispersity effects on the structural correlations and the phase diagram of dense star polymer solutions. In particular we find that a polydispersity of 10%, which is typical in experimental samples, does not significantly alter previous findings for the phase diagram of monodisperse solutions.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Molecular Epidemiology of Early and Acute HIV Type 1 Infections in the United States Navy and Marine Corps, 2005–2010

    The U.S. military represents a unique population within the human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) pandemic. The last comprehensive study of HIV-1 in members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps (Sea Services) was completed in 2000, before large-scale combat operations were taking place. Here, we present molecular characterization of HIV-1 from 40 Sea Services personnel who were identified during their seroconversion window and initially classified as HIV-1 negative during screening. Protease/reverse transcriptase (pro/rt) and envelope (env) sequences were obtained from each member of the cohort. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out on these regions to determine relatedness within the cohort and calculate the most recent common ancestor for the related sequences. We identified 39 individuals infected with subtype B and one infected with CRF01_AE. Comparison of the pairwise genetic distance of Sea Service sequences and reference sequences in the env and pro/rt regions showed that five samples were part of molecular clusters, a group of two and a group of three, confirmed by single genome amplification. Real-time molecular monitoring of new HIV-1 acquisitions in the Sea Services may have a role in facilitating public health interventions at sites where related HIV-1 infections are identified

    Toll-like receptor 2/6-dependent stimulation of mesenchymal stem cells promotes angiogenesis by paracrine factors

    Reconstruction of critical size bone defects represents a major challenge in orthopaedic surgery. Insufficient angiogenesis is a limiting factor for engraftment of large-scale tissue transplants. Transplantation or stimulation of local mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represents a potential solution to enhance angiogenesis. We recently identified angiogenic properties for the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2/6 agonist MALP-2 and now investigated if MALP-2 could be used to stimulate MSCs in order to promote angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo.Human MSCs from the bone marrow of healthy subjects were isolated, cultured and expanded in vitro and were shown to be positive for mesenchymal stem cells markers as well as for the MALP-2 receptors TLR2 and TLR6. MALP-2 directly enhanced migration but not proliferation of human MSCs. Conditioned medium from MALP-2 stimulated MSCs significantly increased proliferation, migration and tube formation of endothelial cells. Analysis of the conditioned medium from MSCs revealed that MALP-2 stimulation enhanced the secretion of several chemokines and growth factors including vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Finally, we studied MALP-2 effects on MSCs in a sheep model of tissue engineering in vivo. Therefore, MSCs were isolated from the iliac crest of black head sheep and co-cultivated with MALP-2 ex vivo. Implantation of autologous MSCs within a scaffold cylinder into the M. latissimus dorsi significantly enhanced vessel density of these constructs after 6 months.We here present the first evidence that TLR2/6-dependent stimulation of MSCs promotes angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo offering a novel strategy for therapeutic angiogenesis, e.g., for tissue engineering of bone
